November 16, International Day of Tolerance
1995 was held at the initiative of UNESCO, United Nations Year for Tolerance, and its course was conducted a global campaign for tolerance and nonviolence. The International Day for Tolerance had its origin in the momentum of that Year.
The development of tolerance and trust in diverse communities is not obtained from the overnight, is something that requires time and effort. Establish tolerance involves access to education. Intolerance is often rooted in ignorance and fear: fear of the unknown, the "other", other cultures, religions and nations. Intolerance is also closely linked to an exaggerated sense of self-esteem and pride, notions taught and learned at an early age. Therefore, in the coming years we must put more emphasis on educating children about tolerance, human rights and fundamental freedoms.
But we must not forget that education does not end in the classroom, and adults-firstly as individuals capable of committing acts of intolerance, but especially in their capacity as parents, legislators and enforcement of the law, also have to be among the main recipients of our educational efforts.
International Day for Tolerance may be an annual occasion for tolerance education and for reflection and social and political debates of wider problems of intolerance on the local and global.
While the problem of intolerance is worldwide, as is increasing in many parts of the world, the manifestations of intolerance usually adopt local and national forms. Thus, to be effective, global standards against intolerance must be combined with local, national and individual.
